The oldest and the most famous theatre in Moscow. It’s building was erected in 1817 by architect Osip Bove. The building of the theatre is beautifully dominating in the architectural ensemble of Theatre Square.
It is here that such famous singers as Chalyapin, Sobinov, Obraztsova, Arkhipova worked and performed. It’s stage has also seen such stars of ballet as Semyonova, Ulanova, Plisetskaya, Maximova, Vasilyev and many others outstanding masters of opera and ballet.
The theatre has resounded to the music played by the orchestras conducted by such famous conductors and musicians as Rakhmaninov, Rastropovich, Svetlanov.
Bolshoi Theatre has been operating for over 170 years. Every year it stages more than 300 performances, both classical and modern ones.
Since they year 2005 the main building of the theatre has been closed for capital restoration and complete reconstruction of its inner premises. The theater is planned to be open by the season of the year 2008. The performances are now held on the New Stage of the theatre only.
