Bogolyubovo, the former princely residence, has now
become part of the city Vladimir. It takes some fifteen minutes
to get there by bus from the city centre. The extant fragments
of the mansion of Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky are now
part of a monastery. The tower with a winding staircase leading
to the bedroom where the prince was fatally wounded is still
standing. There is an icon- lamp and icons in the corner at
the foot of the staircase where the wounded prince tried to
hide himself.
The Bogolyubovo Monastery-cum-Convent is the only
example of church democracy, so to speak, with regard to the
sexes, for both monks and nuns live on its premises. Its main
sacred object is, as before, the icon of Our Lady of Bogolyubovo
painted from the words of Prince Andrei. Of course, it is
a later copy, for the original is kept at the Suzdal Museum.
This is a miracle-working icon all hung with gold chains,
rings, earrings and other jewelry left by parishioners.
